Hello, I’m Marisa and I work as a Creative Arts Therapist. In a nutshell, what this can look like is me using creative methods to delve into the unconscious, and hold a space to allow what is not freely accessible to come forward. Creative methods could be bringing in images, movement, stories, role play, and other forms of art.
However, if you feel more comfortable using the space to talk, the session is yours to lead. Sessions are always taken at a pace that’s right for you, and creative modalities will support you to explore difficulties in a less confronting way. The most important relationship is the relationship we have with ourselves. For me, it is important for you to feel seen and heard exactly as you are, without judgement, and for that reason my approach is warm, empathetic, and accepting. Throughout our journey together, you will have the autonomy to review how you are feeling and shift anything that needs shifting.
Part of my experience stems from working in a charities supporting refugees and asylum seekers, both young people and adults, and offering support to people who have experienced domestic abuse. I am happy to work with, but not limit myself to, those who have experienced relationship issues, emotional abuse, domestic violence, coercion, neurodiversity, childhood trauma, racial trauma, panic attacks, anger issues, low self-esteem, workplace bullying, trauma, self-harm, sexual abuse & trauma, and PTSD.
I offer IEMT (Integral Eye Movement Therapy) sessions which can help reduce intensity around unwanted memories and past trauma. I work with the poly vagal theory, which focuses on getting the nervous system in balance, and leave you feeling more grounded to open up and feel safe to talk about your issues. This can look like breath work, mindfulness based activities, and tapping into the connection between body and mind through somatic work.
When booking, any of our in person sessions can be changed to a virtual session. Book your session first and then pop the therapist and hey@theselfspace.com an email to let them know.
