The Mental Health First Aid Course has been wildly popular with businesses. It’s been adopted by thousands as a strategy to improve the culture of mental health at work. It’s easy to buy and it’s generally considered a really good thing.

But research from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) (the regulator for workplace health and safety in the UK) suggests it’s not enough.

In 2021 they looked into the evidence of the effectiveness of Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training in the workplace.

Three major conclusions from this research were:

  • There is no evidence that mental health first aid training is effective for organisations.
  • There’s no evidence traditional one-off mental health training courses make a sustained positive impact.
  • There is limited evidence that MHFA training leads to sustained improvement in the ability of those trained to help colleagues experiencing mental ill‐health.

So, we’ve decided to do something about it.

We hosted a webinar and invited colleagues from across the HR and people profession to come along. Alongside sharing some of the work we do at Self Space with our Business Partners, we shared valuable insights into the challenges around mental health first aid, as well as thoughts and ideas of things that are free to implement today.
