Say hello to Flow.
Tech built for your therapy experience

Brain stimulation therapy for depression: your guide to combining it with therapy

Why Self Space is teaming up with Flow Neuroscience

At Self Space, we believe that the process of mental maintenance should evolve alongside the people seeking it.

That’s why we’re always looking for options that are contemporary and genuinely useful, not just new for the sake of it. It’s what led us to Flow Neuroscience.

Backed by clinical evidence, Flow offers a non-invasive option for treatment. Medication is essential for many, but there is a growing demand for extra science-backed tools that fit seamlessly into daily life and therapy.

More than 25 years of tDCS research (transcranial direct current stimulation) sits behind Flow, with studies backing both its safety and its potential in modern depression care.

What excites us is what happens when technology like this meets the kind of therapy we already believe in: more holistic, more personalised, and, in our view, more effective.

This isn’t about replacing therapy; it’s about giving people choices. Mental health is personal, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Putting our clients first means remaining open to what’s ahead.

What is Flow?

Flow pairs a tDCS headset with behavioural therapy using the Flow app, to treat depression. It targets the underactive parts of the brain behind low mood, fatigue and poor focus, helping restore healthier brain function.

The headset delivers a gentle electrical current (that’s the tDCS bit) to rebalance brain activity, ease depressive symptoms, and support your day-to-day wellbeing. It’s non-invasive throughout.

Half an hour, that's it

Each Flow session is 30 minutes, and it slots into your day however suits you, relaxing, working, or working through one of the app’s therapy courses.

Activation Phase

Is Flow for me?

Flow is designed for adults aged 18+ who have been diagnosed with depression .

It works alongside antidepressants or talking therapy, or on its own as a stand-alone treatment, whichever fits where you're at.

It's built to be simple. Set up the Flow App on your phone, and do the whole thing from home.

Your Self Space therapist can help you understand how Flow can work alongside your therapy.

How it works alongside therapy at Self Space

Think of it as two different jobs, done well, at the same time. Therapy is where you make sense of your thoughts, feelings and patterns. The headset works on something else entirely: the part of your brain linked to mood regulation. One handles the psychological side, the other the neurobiological side, and together, they back each other up.

You will have a therapy session with a Self Space therapist who has completed additional training on Flow. You won’t use the headset during a therapy session itself. It’s designed to be used at home, on a structured plan, running alongside your ongoing work with your Self Space therapist. They’ll help you notice what’s shifting, in your mood, your motivation, or how you’re showing up to the work.

Try before you commit

Book a 30-minute demo with one of our Self Space Flow Facilitators at any of our London locations. You’ll get hands-on with the headset and talk it all through with someone who knows it inside out, no commitment, just a chance to see if it’s right for you.

Worth knowing before you book: one session on its own won’t do much. Flow’s own research shows most people begin to notice a difference after about three weeks of regular use. So treat the demo as a chance to get comfortable and ask your questions, not a preview of results.

Business FAQs

Therapy helps you work through your thoughts, feelings and patterns. Flow supports the part of your brain linked to mood regulation. Used together, one backs up the other: therapy for the psychological insight, Flow for the neurobiological side of low mood.

You won’t use it during sessions. It’s typically used at home, on a structured plan, while your therapy with us carries on as normal. Your therapist can help you notice what it’s doing for your mood, motivation, or how engaged you’re feeling with the work.

If you’re dealing with low mood or depressive symptoms, and you’re already in therapy but want a bit more in your corner, this could be worth exploring. It’s not a replacement for therapy, it’s extra support for the times progress feels slow or up and down.

This is one to talk through with your therapist. It’ll come down to what’s going on for you, what you want, and where you’re at. It tends to make most sense for people already in therapy who want some added, structured support for low mood.

Yes. The headset complements the therapeutic process.

Through a mix of things: how you’re reporting your mood, what comes up in your therapy sessions, and the structured feedback tools Flow provides. Your therapist can weave all of that into your ongoing work, so you both know what’s helping.

Some people notice shifts in mood or motivation within a few weeks. For others, it’s slower and more gradual. Everyone’s different, and part of what therapy does is help you make sense of the smaller shifts as they happen, not just wait for a big before-and-after.
