Head of Clinical

Hey, hello, hi, now then. We’re Self Space.

Founded in 2017, Self Space was launched to help address a growing need for accessible and contemporary mental health support. As we grow, we continue to deliver on our mission to transform and modernise mental health culture by supporting individuals and companies to reach their full potential.

Our values matter a lot to us:
● Clients First: We put clients at the heart of everything we do.
● Radical Compassion: We lead with empathy and kindness.
● Name It: We say what needs saying, even when it’s tough.
● Keep the Edge: Be bold. Disrupt the norm, but with love.
● Look After You: We take care of ourselves as much as someone we love.
● Grit: Perseverance and passion. We know it takes a lot to shift culture.

Who we are looking for.

We’re looking for an experienced clinical leader to take overall leadership responsibility for Self Space’s clinical function. The Head of Clinical is responsible for the leadership, development and performance of the Senior Clinical Team and provides clinical oversight across our wider therapist community. The role ensures that Self Space continues to deliver safe, ethical, effective and high-quality clinical care while developing a strong, connected and high-performing clinical culture. You’ll provide both strategic and day-to-day leadership across the clinical function, ensuring that our clinical standards, people, policies, safeguarding, training and development evolve alongside the organisation.

You’ll lead the Senior Clinical Team, setting clear priorities, expectations and accountability while supporting them to lead their respective portfolios and the wider therapist community effectively. You’ll ensure that clinical issues are managed at the appropriate level, stepping in on complex, high-risk or organisationally significant matters where senior clinical oversight is required.

You’ll also act as the central clinical lead for Self Space, working closely with the Managing Director, Operations Director and wider leadership team to make sure clinical thinking is represented in organisational decisions, new services, products, partnerships and business development. Fundamentally, this role holds the clinical integrity of Self Space, making sure that as the organisation grows and changes, the quality, safety and humanity of our clinical work remains at its centre.

Core Job Role:
● Clinical Leadership & Team Management: Lead and manage the Senior Clinical Team, providing clear direction, supervision, accountability and development. Set priorities across the clinical function and ensure Senior Clinicians have the structure, resources and support needed to lead their areas effectively. Build leadership capability and succession across the clinical team.

● Clinical Standards & Quality Assurance: Hold overall responsibility for clinical standards across Self Space. Develop and oversee quality assurance and performance frameworks covering clinical practice, record keeping, complaints, professional standards and quality of care. Use clinical data, feedback and outcomes to identify themes, risks and opportunities for improvement.

● Risk & Safeguarding: Hold senior clinical oversight of Self Space’s safeguarding and risk management framework. Ensure clear systems exist for identifying, escalating, documenting and
responding to risk. Provide senior consultation and decision-making for complex or high-risk cases and ensure appropriate safeguarding coverage across the clinical leadership structure.

● Clinical Governance, Policies & Procedures: Own and oversee the clinical governance framework, ensuring clinical policies, procedures and guidance remain current, proportionate and embedded in practice. Maintain alignment with relevant ethical, professional, regulatory and legal requirements and lead clinical responses where organisational learning or policy change is required.

● Clinical People Leadership & Culture: Hold oversight of the experience, engagement, wellbeing and development of Self Space’s wider therapist community. Work through the Senior Clinical Team to create a clinically rigorous, reflective and connected culture where clinicians feel supported while remaining accountable to clear professional standards.

● Clinical Recruitment & Onboarding: Hold overall responsibility for the clinical recruitment and onboarding framework, including workforce planning, clinical selection standards and final clinical oversight of hiring decisions. Ensure recruitment supports the skills, diversity, therapeutic modalities and clinical capability required by the organisation.

● Training, Learning & Development: Set the clinical learning and development strategy for the therapist community. Oversee clinical CPD, reflective practice, performance development and
learning initiatives, ensuring that development needs identified through clinical governance, therapist feedback and organisational priorities translate into meaningful training.

● Clinical Performance: Oversee the clinical performance framework and support Senior Clinicians in managing concerns relating to clinical practice, conduct or capability. Take senior responsibility for complex performance matters and ensure that performance management is fair, clinically informed, well documented and focused on maintaining safe and effective care.

● Clinical Pathways & Products: Provide senior clinical leadership for the development, review and implementation of clinical pathways, services and products. Ensure new clinical offerings are ethical, evidence-informed, operationally viable and appropriately governed, working collaboratively with Operations and other relevant teams.

● Self Space Academy: Provide clinical leadership and oversight for the Self Space Academy – the reduced rate pathway and placement programme and other clinical learning products, ensuring
content reflects clinical best practice and supports both clinician development and wider organisational objectives.

● Strategic Clinical Leadership: Translate organisational strategy into clear clinical priorities and ensure clinical expertise is represented in strategic decision-making. Advise senior leadership on
clinical risk, workforce, service development, quality and opportunities for growth.

● Cross-functional Leadership: Work closely with the Operations Director and other functional leads to ensure strong alignment between clinical quality and operational delivery. Provide clinical expertise to Partnerships, Product, People, Marketing and other teams where decisions have implications for clinical practice, clients or therapists.

● Clinical Change & Organisational Development: Lead the clinical function through periods of organisational change, ensuring decisions affecting therapists, services or client care are clinically
considered, clearly communicated and safely implemented.

● Escalation & Decision Making: Act as the senior point of escalation for clinical matters that cannot appropriately be resolved within the Senior Clinical Team. Make timely, proportionate and defensible clinical decisions and ensure learning is fed back into systems, policy and practice.

● Uphold Values: Model Self Space’s values across clinical leadership and challenge practice, behaviour or organisational decisions where these conflict with safe, ethical or high-quality clinical
care.
